Keep An Eye Out: Signs Of Going Bald

October 8, 2018 By Advanced Hair Studio

Keep An Eye Out: Signs Of Going Bald Baldness is a natural part of growing old for many people, but our society has long associated attractiveness and youth with having hair – hence why so many people find hair loss so distressing. Hair loss is often accompanied by feelings of shame or embarrassment, but by knowing the signs to look out for, you can treat your hair loss in time.

Here are some of the more common signs of total hair loss, as well as what your options are when it strikes.

What Causes Baldness?

The main cause of baldness, in most men and women throughout their lifetimes, is pattern hair loss. This is a form of hair loss caused by the activity of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is used in the development of the adult body, but also has the unfortunate side effect of binding to hair follicles.

DHT causes the follicles to shrink and weaken, thereby ceasing to support any of the ‘terminal’ hairs that make up the easily visible part of our hair. This form of baldness is extremely common and will happen to around half of men and a third of women by the time they reach their 50s. It is also irreversible, but this does not mean it cannot be treated.

Though it is primarily genetic in nature, a number of other factors can affect the timing of when it begins to take place:

  • A high stress lifestyle
  • Compromised immune system
  • Side effects of certain medications
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Poor diet and nutrition

Hair Falling Out

If you are noticing hair falling out in the shower, or more loose hair present on your pillow in the mornings, this might be a sign that pattern hair loss is beginning to set in. It is normal for about 50-100 hairs to fall per day for individuals with healthy, non-balding hair, but you will be able to tell if hair begins to fall at an elevated rate.

Receding Hairline

A receding hairline is one of the most classic signs of baldness. This usually presents itself as a gradual upward shift of the front hairline, as opposed to the development of a widow’s peak. A receding hairline is genetically determined. Hair may also begin to recede at the temples. A receding hairline often results in hair that looks thin or wispy at the front; however, hair can remain in this state for decades before more advanced or total hair loss begins to take place.

Thinning Hair

Similar to the above, thinning hair will generally follow a pattern around the scalp and crown in cases of pattern hair loss. As hair follicles begin to shrink, due to the effects of DHT, it becomes increasingly harder to support hairs, hence they begin to fall and eventually thin out. Hair that falls out in patches, or in any sort of irregular pattern is likely to be caused by something else; it may be autoimmune or microbial in nature.
