Genetic Hair Loss – What You Need To Know

August 24, 2018 By Advanced Hair Studio

Genetic Hair Loss Before blaming your parents for the patches of hair falling out in the shower, you need to know that there’s a bit more to hair loss than just genetics. Genetics are important, but they don’t give you the whole picture – hair loss is unfortunately a bit more complicated than it seems, and there are real solutions out there to help you combat your genetics.

Is There A Baldness Gene?

Though a single ‘baldness gene’ would be convenient, baldness is polygenetic – the result of hundreds of genes interacting together. These genes interact with the environment, affecting how and when hair grows and tapers off.

This can result in Male Pattern Baldness, known commonly as Alopecia, and is the leading cause of baldness in men. Half of men will experience some form of balding of this form by the time they reach 50, with receding hairlines and hair loss at the crown as the most common signs.

It’s well known that this form of baldness is primarily genetic in nature. The genes for this are mainly inherited on the mother’s side of the family, though a balding father is a reliable predictor for baldness in men.

What Else Is Involved?

Hair loss is as much informed by genes as it is by environmental and lifestyle factors and comprehensive hair loss solutions will involve addressing a number of these factors. Some of the most common non-genetic causes of baldness include:

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Poor nutrition
  • Weight loss
  • Poor hair maintenance
  • Hormonal fluctuations
  • Ageing
  • Certain medicines

What Can Be Done About It?

Whilst baldness is for the most part genetic, it should not be confused with a disease. All it really represents is a change in the ways the body responds to androgens (male sex hormones) which cause hair follicles to gradually shrink.

The effects are mainly psychological. A slow march toward inevitable baldness not only be irritating, but humiliating as well. For many, baldness will come along with many other confusing changes, as age sets in. But it doesn’t need to be suffered in silence when there are effective, proven options available to you.
